Biography

Yuval Sharon, The Industry’s Founder and Founding Artistic Director and the recently appointed Gary L. Wasserman Artistic Director of Detroit’s Michigan Opera Theatre, has amassed an unconventional body of work that expands the operatic form. Hailed as “opera’s disrupter in residence” (New York Times), Sharon’s stage productions have been described as “ingenious” (New York Times), “virtuosic” (Opernwelt), “dizzyingly spectacular” (New York Magazine), and “staggering” (Opera News). With The Industry, he has directed and produced new operas in moving vehicles, operating train stations, Hollywood sound stages, and various “non-spaces” such as warehouses, parking lots, and escalator corridors. From 2016-2019, he served as the first Artist-Collaborator at the Los Angeles Philharmonic and is the first American ever invited to direct at Bayreuth. In 2017, Sharon was honored with a MacArthur Fellowship and a Foundation for Contemporary Art grant for theater.
