Engage with The Industry Company and Sweet Land Artists
The core of The Industry’s mission is to be artist-driven. We have had the absolute honor of working with so many incredible artists over the years and most recently with The Industry’s Company Members and the artists featured in Sweet Land. Read on for a list of submissions that we have received so far from our artists of the projects they are working on, and if you are able, please consider supporting them in their endeavors during these difficult times. (Please note that the list is organized in descending order based on the date of submission/revision.)
- Voice practitioners Carmina Escobar and Micaela Tobin are launching HOWL SPACE: a virtual hub that offers both personalized and group development through individual sessions, rotating monthly skill-and-process workshops, and a series of salons with guest artists and producers whose practices focus on different aspects of the holistic voice. Their launch will be Oct 2-4 and will include two workshops and a Voice Salon that will feature among others Sweet Land’s co-composer Du Yun.
- Violinist and sound artist Adrianne Pope is a member of Aperture Duo, which is in the process of releasing Moon Units, a set of 13 miniatures based on different full moons written by Pauline Kim Harris and commissioned by Aperture Duo. Each miniature will be released on the date of its corresponding full moon, now until July 24th, 2021.
- Fahad Siadat composed The Conference of the Birds, a new oratorio with a libretto by Sholeh Wolpé based on Sufi mystic poet Attar’s seminal text about the journey of the soul as it seeks union with the Divine. Conference of the Birds is directed/choreographed by André Megerdichian.
- Flutist and saxophonist Damon Zick is a member of the world chamber jazz ensemble: Quarteto Nuevo, which merges western classical, eastern European folk, Latin, and jazz with an organic feel that packs a wallop! Learn more about their work at Quartetonuevo.com.
- You can now take online voice lessons – beginning and intermediate vocal technique – with singer Maria Elena Altany through the Maria Elena Altany Online Voice Studio.
- stickytack is a piano+ new music duo based in Los Angeles featuring Richard An + Wells Leng.
- Matt Barbier‘s Platonic Solids is a work inspired by a series of abrasion holograms of the same name by Tristan Duke and is an attempt to realize them directly as sound.
- The Koan Quartet, featuring cellist Jennifer Bewerse, just released their debut digital EP with the premiere recording of String Quartet IV by Johanna Beyer, an experimental composer of the 1930s.
- Mezzo-soprano Mindy Ella Chu is featured as soloist in a new chamber version of the Duruflé Requiem with Stanford University Chamber Choir, St. Lawrence String Quartet and Omer String Quartet, Nikolas Nackley (baritone), Stephen Sano (conductor), and Robert Huw Morgan (organ) – Album Release May 15, 2020 on Apple Music.
- The Furies (Maiani da Silva and Kate Outterbridge) is a contemporary violin duo fearlessly empowering the female identifying experience through chamber music and education.
- You can check out Ashley Faatoalia‘s first solo album of original pop/R&B, Extra. And for the next eight weeks, Ashley is teaming up with fellow Industry member Cedric Berry to host a weekly live show Thursdays at 4pm on Long Beach Opera’s Facebook.
- Mezzo soprano and lead director of The Opera Company @ LACHSA (Los Angeles County High School for the Arts) Suzanna Guzmán is working to expand her four-day Fall Opera Intensive for young singers, which focuses on college audition prep, dance, body work, and classical repertoire coaching. - Kurt Kanazawa recently co-narrated the audiobooks of an upcoming Adult Romance series, The Heirs of Hansol Series, by Jayci Lee.
- Mexican-American guitarist, producer, educator and composer Lily Guarneros Maase is a working at the nexus between performance radical feminism, the guitar as oral tradition, and the witchcraft and folklore cultures of the American southwest. She will be releasing a preview of her forthcoming projects Penitente (amplified) and Curandera (acoustic) in early September.
- Molly Pease‘s newest project, “Musical Trades,” involves blind creative collaborations in which she asks musician friends to record an original something and send it to her to add to; and then she does the reverse. The end result is two brand new compositions.
- Join Sarah Belle Reid‘s Patreon community, where she posts tutorials on experimental + electronic music, behind-the-scenes content, and hosts monthly Virtual Listening Parties to discover and engage with new music.
- Supporting Kathryn Shuman on Patreon gives you access to her latest projects (including early-release info on her upcoming album “Duets for Voice and Landscape”), patron-only musical releases, voice tutorial and warm-up videos, and references to artists and work she’s inspired by most.
- Join Nandani Maria Sinha for Music to Remember, a weekly LA Opera concert inspired by the powerful role that music plays in restoring the body, soul and memory. These weekly, virtual recitals with LA Opera teaching artist Nandani Sinha stimulate remembrance and gently invite reflection through familiar and beloved songs.
- Starting with Schoenberg’s Hanging Gardens, singer Peabody Southwell will deconstruct works she holds sacred and share the shards in mixed media videos in her newest project, Deconstruction of What I Know (mixed media).
- Soprano/Sound Artist Micaela Tobin‘s latest album, ‘BAKUNAWA‘, is now! Of the album, Steve Smith of The New Yorker writes that “opera would do well to pay attention.” You can purchase the album here.
- Diana Wade is working on recording the complete viola sonatas of Paul Hindemith. Diana Wade will be tackling the ultimate gauntlet for violists: recording the 7 sonatas for viola by Paul Hindemith, a project she’s dreamt of since she was 18.
- Lucy Tucker Yates is offering diction and dramaturgy coaching for Italian opera.
