Biography

Alexandro Segade’s world-building projects envision a spectacular queer utopia, complicated by radical ambivalence. Often working in experimental, interdisciplinary art collectives, Segade constructs group identities through moving image, installation, performance, drawing, sculpture, writing, and comics. Segade co-founded My Barbarian with Malik Gaines and Jade Gordon, whose performance-based work has been included in the Whitney Biennial, two Performa Biennials, was the subject of a solo exhibition at the New Museum in 2016, and a Whitney survey exhibition in 2021. Segade’s multimedia science-fiction performances, including the dystopian play Future St, have been presented at the Park Avenue Armory and Judson Church in NYC; Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, Bard College; Time-Based Art Festival, Portland, Oregon; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; Vox Populi, Philadelphia; and LAXART, REDCAT, the Broad Museum in LA. Segade’s graphic novel, The Context, was published by Primary Information in May 2020, and his comics have since appeared in issues of Artforum and Creative Time Comics 2020.
