Interstellar Salon

Saturday, March 26, 2022, 5pm Charles Gaines Studio

“The destiny of Earthseed is to take root among the stars.” – Octavia Butler

“Sooner or later, for good or ill, a united mankind, equipped with science and power, will probably turn its attention to the other planets, not only for economic exploitation but also as possible homes for man…” – Olaf Stapledon

“You can go home again … so long as you understand that home is a place where you have never been.” – Ursula Le Guin

Stars. Space. Exploration. Colonization. Human. Alien. Extraterrestrial. Intelligence. Science. Fiction.

Is it possible to disentangle the language of settler colonialism from the development of interstellar travel? Is there a post-earth future for humanity? Does it deserve one? In thinking through the questions posed by the narrative of their opera Star Choir, Malik Gaines and Alexandro Segade invite a group of influential artists, Charles Gaines, Suzanne Kite, Candice Lin, Will Rawls, and Cauleen Smith, to consider what living on an exoplanet might look like. Can we avoid repeating history on an intergalactic scale?

Tickets for Interstellar Salon are sold out.

This salon is in conjunction with The Industry’s production of Star Choir, by Malik Gaines and Alexandro Segade, premiering in Los Angeles 2023.
